Full Description:
The Florida Constitution establishes county Tax Collectors as independent government agencies. They are referred to as Constitutional Officers. Tax Collectors are elected for a four-year term in the Presidential election year.
The independence of the Tax Collector's Office is necessary to serve citizens and both local and state agencies as it:
Collects property taxes for every local government agency with the power to levy taxes.
Serves the state as an agent for the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, the Department of Environmental Protection, the Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission, and the Department of Revenue.
Manages local revenue programs, such as issuing occupational licenses and collecting tourist development taxes.
